The Journal of GeoEngineering covers various topics in geotechnical
engineering. Original papers are welcomed for the following
areas: geotechnical engineering, geo-materials, hazard
mitigation, sustainable infrastructure and maintenance,
geo-ecological engineering, geo-environmental engineering,
engineering geology/geological engineering, earthquake
engineering, applications of geographical information system,
etc. Practical papers emphasizing case studies and subsequent
interpretations of mechanisms and behaviors are especially
welcomed.

Once a manuscript is submitted, a preliminary screening is performed by the Editor-in-Chief and the Executive Editor of the journal.
The preliminary screening is to ensure that the submitted article fits the aims and scope of the journal,
English standard, and technical requirements. Upon the preliminary screening, the Editor-in-Chief is permitted to take the following actions:
- Send the manuscript for formal reviews.
- Decline the manuscript because the paper is outside the scope of the journal.
- Decline the manuscript because the English writing is substandard.
- Decline the manuscript because the technical content is insufficient.
Once the manuscript passes the preliminary screening, it will be sent for formal reviews. In the formal review process, the Editor-in-Chief may send the manuscript to an editorial board member (EBM) who invites reviewers. The reviewers provide detailed reviews to improve the manuscript. The EBM then makes an overall assessment for the manuscript based on at least two reviewers’ comments.
Once the EBM submits the overall assessment and recommendation to the journal office, the Editor-in-Chief reviews the recommendation and makes a final decision on the manuscript. The decision can be one of the following:
- Accept
- Minor revisions
- Major revisions
- Decline
Upon submitting a revised manuscript to the journal, authors are required to submit a response to the review comments. Authors need to satisfactorily address the review comments from all reviewers and make necessary revisions. The page and line numbers of the revisions should be indicated in the response. If authors do not agree with a review comment, they need to explain the rationale in the response. The revised manuscript can be rejected if the reviewers’ comments are not addressed satisfactorily.
The issues of publication ethics include, but are not limited to, plagiarism, copyright violation, duplicate publication, and conflict of interest:
- Plagiarism: Including all or part of someone else’s work without attribution and/or permission.
- Copyright violation: Submitting work owned by someone else without securing permission to use it.
- Duplicate publication: Publishing the same material with more than one publisher or more than one publication type (books, journals, and proceedings).
- Conflict of interest: Neglecting to disclose financial interests (such as funding source, employment or consultancy with a private company, honoraria, etc.) or non-financial interests (such as personal or professional relationship, academic competition, religious view, etc.) that could affect editor’s, reviewer’s and readers’ objectivity inappropriately.
If an ethical issue is identified, several courses of action are possible. A published paper could be retracted; however, retraction does not mean that the paper “disappears” from view, only that it is marked with a retraction notice and explanation for the retraction. If the violator is associated with a university, the university may be notified. For the issue of conflict of interest, the journal may use the declared conflict as a basis for editorial decisions and may publish the manuscript if it is believed to be important to readers. Likewise, the journal may decide not to publish on the basis of the declared conflict.
